Carotid baroreflex function in young men with borderline blood pressure elevation.

چکیده

Carotid baroreflex function was assessed in 10 normotensive young men and 20 age-matched subjects with borderline hypertension (successive blood pressures above and below 140/90 mm Hg) by measuring sinus node responses to brief neck suction. Subjects with borderline hypertension were divided into two equal groups according to their average systolic arterial pressures. Baroreflex responses were reset to function at higher pressure levels than normal in subjects with mild borderline hypertension, but reflex sensitivity was normal. Responses were also reset in subjects with more severe borderline hypertension, but reflex was subnormal. The results suggest that a gradation of baroreflex responsiveness exists among patients classified as having borderline hypertension: Subnormal responsiveness was found in those subjects whose resting average systolic arterial pressure was greater than or equal to 140 mm Hg.

Exercise blood pressure and baroreflex function in borderline hypertensive and normotensive young men.

1. Resting carotid baroreflex sensitivity and blood pressure responses to standardized conditions of rest and exercise were measured in 17 borderline hypertensive males and 12 normotensive males. 2. The borderline hypertensive group had significantly higher systolic and diastolic blood pressures during orthostatic rest and isometric handgrip exercise and higher systolic blood pressure during su...

Neuromechanical features of the cardiac baroreflex after exercise.

A single bout of exercise is associated with postexercise hypotension, transient decreases in autonomic function, and changes in baroreflex sensitivity. The baroreflex is less sensitive to falling blood pressure than to rising blood pressure; we characterized the cardiac baroreflex in terms of hysteresis and its mechanical and neural components. We hypothesized that hysteresis would be exacerba...

Regular endurance exercise in young men increases arterial baroreflex sensitivity through neural alteration of baroreflex arc.

Endurance exercise training increases arterial baroreflex sensitivity that corresponds to alteration in vessel wall compliance of the carotid artery in elderly men. Here, we examined whether regular endurance exercise increases arterial baroreflex sensitivity through neural alteration of the baroreflex arc in young men. We assessed arterial baroreflex sensitivity in eight sedentary men (age 24 ...

Re-parameterization of the Logistic Model in Assessing Changes in the Baroreceptor Reflex

The logistic model is frequently used to describe the nonlinear relationship between systemic arterial pressure (SAP) and carotid sinus pressure (CSP). In this paper, we propose using maximum gain and saturation as parameters in the logistic model. By this method, the estimates and standard errors together with confidence intervals for maximum gain and saturation are direct outputs from the cur...

Augmentation of cardiopulmonary baroreflex control of forearm vascular resistance in borderline hypertension.

Arterial baroreflex control of heart rate is impaired in young men with borderline or mild hypertension. Despite this impairment, these subjects often have exaggerated increases in vascular resistance during orthostatic stress. We considered the possibility that this exaggerated reflex vasoconstriction might reflect augmented cardiopulmonary baroreflex control of vascular resistance in borderli...
